WHY SO MANY POULTRY FARMERS ARE FOLDING UP IN NIGERIA.
Good Day all poultry farmer in the house, sorry to bother you again.
Just minutes ago as I was about going to work somebody sent me a message on Facebook requesting to know why so many poultry farmers are folding up.
Please kindly read below some of the reasons to the best of my knowledge and please do not hesitate to revert back to me in case you have any clarification. Also, feel free to add more reasons in case you know any so that we can all learn together .

WHY SO MANY POULTRY FARMERS ARE FOLDING UP IN NIGERIA
It's important that anybody going into any business must have basic knowledge of the business and understand the environment in which the the business will operate.
It's also important for the Intending business owner to be Patience, baby don't walk the day you give birth to them. Having note, this So many factors could be responsible for folding up of poultry farming in our society today. This factors are not limited but include the under-listed:-
INEXPERIENCE
Some people don't really have the poultry business idea or knowledge but the moment they see their friend or neighbor making money from the business rather than for them to ask questions Or undergo poultry training they will just venture into it because they have the money.
Again, some of this inexperience farmer get information or instruction on birds treatment from quacks veterinary doctors rather than allowing experience veterinary personnel to treat their birds all in the name of cutting cost.
Advise
Knowledge the say is power, ensure you acquire knowledge or training about poultry farming before you venture into it and anytime you observed issues with the birds rather than doing a guise treatment please contact your vet. center.
POOR BIO-SECURITY MEASURES
This is another dangerous issue that can make poultry farm to fold up. The environment of the farm is expected to be clean just like your living room. If you can not drink from the water in the birds water pipe then you have not gotten there. You should ensure that inside the pen house as well as the environment are clean in such a way that you can eat conveniently without complaining of flies or smell.
Advise
Cleanliness they say is nearest to Holiness. Ensure both the farm environment, feed tray and water pipe as well as the pen are kept neat and clean always. Disinfect your pen and environment regularly. Your staff are to Cull or separate sick birds and always wash their hand before going into the pen house or anytime they have contact with a sick bird.
POOR PLANNING
It's a known fact that there is usually glut in this side of the world between March -June. During this period irrespective of the cost of birds feed, the prices of egg will definitely be forced to go down as a result of glut. Therefore, if a new person venture into the poultry business during this period, he or she will have no choice other than to close down the business because he or she won't be able to breakeven not to talk of making profit
Advise
Plan your birds in such a way that they will be ready for sale in April during Easter period so that there will be artificial scarcity of egg during glut period.
SOURCE OF BIRDS
Where you got your birds from and the history is another thing that can kill poultry business. Your birds be it a day old or POL if it's gotten from a wrong or less quality hatchery will tell on the farmer. Some farmers don't usually get their birds from the right source due to the fact that they are trying to cut cost.
Advise
Ensure you get your birds from the right source and find out the birds history so that they can give you optimum output as at when due to achieve your aim of profit making.
MEDICATION AND VACCINATION
Another thing that can make a poultry farmer to fold up is not giving the right quantity, quality of medication and vaccination to the birds at the right time.
Just like the human being, there is nothing like managing when it comes to giving medication or drugs to the birds. You need to give them the correct drugs or vaccine, the right quantity and quality as at when necessary to enable them perform well, otherwise this will affect their performance and it might send the farmer out of business.
Advise
Give the birds the right quantity of drugs and vaccination at the right time to prevent and avoid diseases.
FEED
The type of feed you give to your birds is another thing that will determined if a poultry farmer will last in the business or not. Some farmer use sub standard feed while some get feed from local feed millers. Many at times the ingredient of the feed ate inadequate or the feeds are contaminated either during production or because it was too long in the stock. Sincerely, it's what you give to your birds that they will give back to you therefore, if you give a bad feed then you should expect a bad production too.
Another thing is that when you under feed your birds they will definitely under produce egg for you. For instance 200 layers birds are expected to eat a 25kg laying bag of feed per day anything short of this will affect egg production or the size of the eggs.
Advise
Use good feed and right quantity of feed so that you can get the best production.
ACTIVITIES OF THE MIDDLEMEN
Sincerely, the activities of the middlemen is another thing that can make a poultry business to fold up. The middlemen will always want to buy egg at the lowest price from farmer for them to sell at a higher price. They will always complain to the farmer that the price is too high from the farm and that consumer are complaining meanwhile they are the one selling far far above the price they bought the egg from you. They will force you to reduce your selling price which will reduced your and increase their own profit.
Advise
Always try to interact with the consumer and the retailers once in a while so that you will have better idea of how much the middlemen are selling to them, this will guide you on what your selling price should be.
PILFERING
Another thing that could make a poultry farmer to fold up is pilfering. This is when the farm staff start taking some farm produce bit by bit. It could be egg, birds, drugs, feed or farm equipment. When what is supposed to form part of poultry owners profit has been stolen by the staff or farm attendant.
Advise
Ensure you employ trustworthy staff, pay them well compared to what is obtainable in the market and pay them as at when due to discourage them from pilfering.
ECONOMY
Finally, another thing that could make a poultry farmer to fold up in the economy of this country. The economy is not stable thereby making it unfriendly for every business including farmers.
Advise
Since it's an uncontrollable factor there is nothing farmer can do than to adjust with the economy situation anytime it changes.
